Amazing JH Waterfalls
All of us at one time or other travel to see natural wonders. Wouldn't it be nice to have natural wonders within a short walk or bike ride from your home? Even in your own neighborhood? Jasper Highlands offers this within its boundaries. In addition to the trademark mountain views across the Tennessee River Valley, Jasper Highlands features Raulston Falls and Kimball Falls.
Just imagine being able to walk down a landscaped, maintained paved road to access a walking trail that leads to a bench strategically placed atop a rock bluff, under the shade of a towering oak. To your left is the wooded escarpment of the West Brow of Jasper Highlands, straight ahead, below your perch on the bench, is hardwood forest and incredible rock formations. But when your gaze goes to the right to the west.that is when Mother Nature offers her best (the anticipation is already evident as you have heard the roar of the water). The wooded mountains and valleys in the distance provide quite a backdrop for the cascading water only a stone's throw up the brow from your perch. Raulston Falls. If you are there during the afternoon, chances are the droplets of pure mountain water will act as a prism to capture the sunlight, producing an array of coloration against the limestone bluff behind the falls. When you finally decide to move, a short walk toward the falls will reveal a view of the mighty Tennessee River, meandering its way through the valley below. This simple walk to the bench at Raulston Falls can produce quite a refreshing and inspiring experience..the mountain breeze in the leaves, the waterfall, the massive rock formations, the deep forest, the serenity.. priceless... all not far from your back door.
On the other side of Jasper Highlands, the East Brow, is Kimball Falls. Wider than Raulston Falls, but not as high, the natural experience is similar. Kimball Falls was created by the waters of Kimball Creek tumbling over stair-step rock formations at an elbow of the escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau within Jasper Highlands. The result is a very noisy waterfall flanked by impressive rock bluffs on two sides all beneath a canopy of tall Chestnut Oaks, Red Oaks, and Yellow Poplar.
